A suspension component most drivers never see has pulled nearly 1.2 million Teslas into a new federal safety investigation. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is examining reports that a front lower lateral link can detach on certain Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs, potentially disrupting directional control and leaving the vehicle unable to move under its own power.
The inquiry remains at an early stage, and regulators have not announced a new recall or concluded that every covered vehicle is defective. Even so, the combination of 156 owner complaints, limited warning before some failures and two earlier, much smaller recalls has made the case unusually significant. For Tesla owners, the central question is whether regulators are looking at scattered component failures—or a broader problem that escaped the boundaries of earlier repairs.
The Probe Reaches Tesla’s Mass-Market Core
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened Preliminary Evaluation PE26006 on July 29, 2026. It covers an estimated 1,198,300 vehicles: 2018 through 2020 Model 3 sedans and 2021 through 2023 Model Y crossovers. Those are not niche products from Tesla’s early years. They are two of the company’s most recognizable mass-market vehicles, widely used for commuting, family transportation and ride-hailing work.
The agency says it received 156 complaints alleging that the front lower lateral link detached. At the time the investigation opened, NHTSA listed no associated crashes, fires, injury incidents or fatalities. That distinction matters: an investigation is not proof that all covered vehicles contain a defect. It means the available reports were serious and consistent enough for federal investigators to begin examining the cause, frequency and potential safety consequences. The size of the population also explains the attention. Even a problem affecting a small share of nearly 1.2 million vehicles can produce a meaningful number of failures if the underlying condition is confirmed.
A Small Link With a Major Job
The part under review is a structural piece of the front suspension. Tesla’s earlier recall filings describe the lateral link as being attached to the subframe by two fasteners. Its job is tied directly to maintaining the wheel’s intended position as the vehicle accelerates, brakes, turns and travels over uneven pavement. It is not the steering wheel or steering motor, but its condition can affect whether steering inputs produce a stable, predictable response at the tire.
Previous federal recall documents explain the risk in practical terms. If the fasteners loosen enough, or the lateral link separates from the subframe, the wheel alignment can shift and the vehicle can become unstable. NHTSA’s new opening report says detachment may cause a loss of directional control and can leave the car undriveable, requiring a tow. That is why the issue is more serious than an ordinary rattle or comfort complaint. A driver may still be holding the steering wheel normally while the suspension geometry beneath the car has changed in a way that makes continued travel unsafe or impossible.
Many Drivers Reported Little or No Warning
One of the most concerning details is how abruptly the alleged failures were reported to occur. NHTSA says most complaints described no advance warning or indication before the suspension failed. Some owners reported noises beforehand, but the agency noted that the vehicle provides no visual warning for the condition. In everyday terms, a driver may not receive a dashboard alert that clearly identifies the developing mechanical problem.
The complaint count should still be interpreted carefully. It does not establish a failure rate, because complaints are not a controlled sample and many vehicles in the investigation population may never experience the issue. At the same time, regulators do not require a fixed number of complaints before opening an investigation. They look for patterns, severity and evidence of a possible safety-defect trend. Here, the pattern involves the same general component, similar allegations of detachment and a consequence that may affect control. For owners, unusual clunking, knocking, a sudden change in steering feel or visibly abnormal wheel alignment should not be dismissed simply because no warning light appears.
Earlier Recalls Were Far Narrower
Tesla has already conducted two U.S. recalls involving lateral-link separation, but both were dramatically smaller than the population now under review. Recall 21V-835 covered 2,791 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from selected 2019 through 2021 model years. Tesla’s filing said improperly secured fasteners could loosen over time, allowing the link to separate. The company responded by inspecting fastener torque and tightening or replacing affected components as necessary.
A second campaign, recall 23V-235, covered 422 Model 3 vehicles from the 2018 and 2019 model years. Tesla identified 25 warranty claims and two field reports that were potentially related, while reporting no known crashes, injuries or deaths. Combined, the two recalls covered 3,213 vehicles. The new investigation’s estimated population is more than 370 times larger. Crucially, NHTSA says the newly reported failures extend beyond the scope of those campaigns and do not appear connected to the production issue that prompted them. Investigators must now determine whether the earlier boundaries were too narrow or whether a different failure mechanism is emerging.
A Preliminary Evaluation Is Not Yet a Recall
A Preliminary Evaluation is the opening phase of NHTSA’s formal defect-investigation process. Investigators typically review complaints, warranty information, field reports, manufacturing data and technical documents supplied by the automaker. NHTSA says this evaluation will focus on the underlying cause, scope and severity of the potential problem. Its published target is generally to complete a preliminary evaluation within eight months, although complex cases can take longer.
Several outcomes are possible. The agency can close the investigation if the evidence does not support further action, upgrade it to a more detailed Engineering Analysis, or see the manufacturer announce a voluntary recall while the review is underway. A recall would require a defined affected population and a remedy, but neither has been announced for PE26006. That means owners should not treat every covered Model 3 or Model Y as officially recalled. It also means the case is not trivial. NHTSA has moved beyond complaint screening and placed the matter into a formal process that can require Tesla to provide detailed records and explain why failures occurred outside the earlier campaigns.
A Hardware Remedy Would Be More Involved Than an Update
Tesla is known for resolving many recall issues through over-the-air software updates, but the component at the centre of this investigation is physical hardware. The exact cause remains unknown, so it is too early to predict a remedy. If investigators find a condition resembling the earlier lateral-link recalls, however, affected vehicles could require hands-on inspection, fastener verification and replacement of damaged suspension parts rather than a downloaded update.
That difference matters operationally. A software change can often reach a large fleet without every vehicle entering a service facility. A mechanical campaign involving inspections, lifts, technicians, parts and possible towing is more time-intensive for both the manufacturer and the owner. The earlier recalls illustrate the likely range of work: Tesla instructed service personnel to confirm fastener torque, tighten or replace fasteners and replace damaged components where necessary. A future remedy could be different if NHTSA finds another root cause, but the scale of the current review raises the stakes. A service action covering even part of 1.2 million vehicles would be substantially more complicated than the two previous campaigns.
Tesla’s Suspension Record Adds Context, Not a Verdict
The new probe does not exist in isolation. In 2024, NHTSA closed a separate investigation involving front-suspension fore-link failures in 74,918 older Model S and Model X vehicles. Investigators identified 426 failures and one minor crash, but found no injuries and no instance in which the failure prevented vehicle control. Most occurred at low speeds. NHTSA closed that case without requiring a recall, while recommending that Tesla expand an existing service bulletin.
That outcome shows why the details of PE26006 will matter more than the headline complaint count alone. Regulators will need to understand where and how the lower lateral link fails, whether vehicles remain controllable, and whether age, mileage, corrosion, impact damage or manufacturing variation contributes. A 2023 Reuters investigation also reported that Tesla had internally tracked a range of suspension and steering-component failures while often attributing damage to customer misuse. Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on the new investigation. Those reports add scrutiny, but they do not determine the technical findings in the current case.
What Owners in the U.S. and Canada Can Do Now
There is no newly announced recall tied to PE26006, so the most useful first step is verification rather than panic. U.S. owners can enter their vehicle identification number in NHTSA’s recall lookup and monitor the investigation record for new documents. Owners who experience a suspected failure can also file a safety complaint, giving regulators details such as mileage, repair invoices, photographs and the circumstances surrounding the event. Those reports can help investigators distinguish isolated damage from a repeatable defect pattern.
Canadian owners should remember that a U.S. investigation does not automatically create a Canadian recall. Transport Canada maintains its own recall database and defect-investigation system, and Canadian drivers can report suspected safety defects directly to the department. Regardless of country, a sudden steering change, severe suspension noise, abnormal wheel position or inability to drive normally warrants prompt professional attention. Continuing to drive a vehicle with visibly altered alignment or compromised control could worsen damage. Until regulators identify the cause, owners are best served by documenting symptoms, checking existing recalls and arranging an inspection or tow when the vehicle no longer feels safe to operate.
