Hyundai Adds Washington Dealer for XCIENT Hydrogen Semis, Expanding a Truck Already on Sale in Canada

Hydrogen-powered heavy trucks are still rare enough in North America that every new dealership matters. Hyundai Translead’s August 25 addition of Range Zero Emissions in Fife, Washington, gives its XCIENT Fuel Cell Class 8 truck another commercial foothold, this time in a major Pacific Northwest freight market.

The expansion comes only months after Hyundai commercially launched the XCIENT in Canada through Breadner Trailers, building on hydrogen-truck projects already operating in British Columbia. Hyundai is therefore moving beyond isolated demonstrations toward something more familiar to fleet operators: regional dealers, service support and trucks that can actually be ordered. The larger test is whether hydrogen infrastructure can expand quickly enough to make that dealer network useful beyond a relatively small group of carefully planned freight routes.

Washington Gets a Local XCIENT Sales and Service Base

Hyundai Translead added Range Zero Emissions to its authorized commercial-vehicle dealer network on August 25, giving XCIENT customers a new point of contact in Washington state. Range’s flagship location is in Fife, near Tacoma, and Hyundai said the dealership will primarily support customers across Washington while creating opportunities elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest. That distinction matters. Selling a zero-emission Class 8 tractor is only one part of the transaction; operators also need maintenance support, parts expertise and someone capable of helping them navigate an unfamiliar technology.

Range brings a somewhat different model from a traditional single-brand truck dealership. The company describes itself as a multi-manufacturer commercial zero-emission vehicle distributor and works with fleets on vehicles, infrastructure and transition planning. Its Fife operation opened in 2025, putting it close to one of the region’s biggest freight gateways. For a fleet considering hydrogen, having a dealer relatively close to its routes can remove one practical barrier even if the fueling network remains a much bigger one.

The XCIENT Is Built for Work That Battery Trucks Can Find Difficult

The North American XCIENT is a Class 8 fuel-cell electric tractor rather than a conventional diesel or battery-only semi. Hyundai lists an estimated driving range of up to 450 miles under its internal testing conditions, with approximately 68.6 kilograms of onboard hydrogen and a fuel-cell system rated at 180 kilowatts gross output. Electricity produced by the fuel-cell system powers the truck while a battery helps manage energy demand, meaning the truck operates electrically without needing an enormous traction battery to supply its entire working range.

Those characteristics explain why hydrogen continues to attract attention for heavy freight despite slower development than battery-electric trucking. Long-haul and intensive regional operations place a premium on payload, predictable refueling and vehicle uptime. A fuel-cell truck can potentially refuel much more quickly than a large battery pack can recharge, although the advantage depends completely on having high-capacity hydrogen stations in the right places. The XCIENT produces no tailpipe carbon dioxide while operating, but that does not make every kilogram of hydrogen equally clean. Lifecycle emissions depend heavily on how its hydrogen is produced, transported and dispensed.

Canada Moved Ahead With Commercial Sales Earlier This Year

Washington is not Hyundai’s first recent step toward turning the XCIENT into a commercial North American product. On May 13, Hyundai Translead named Breadner Trailers as an authorized Canadian XCIENT dealer, describing the move as the truck’s commercial launch in Canada. At the time, Hyundai said 11 XCIENT trucks were already operating in the country through British Columbia projects, including the BC Hydrogen Ports Project, HTEC’s H2 Gateway initiative and a heavy-duty zero-emission vehicle program overseen by Innovate BC.

That makes Canada an important part of Hyundai’s North American hydrogen strategy rather than simply a future market on a product map. Demonstration fleets can establish that a truck operates in Canadian weather and freight conditions, but a dealer changes the relationship with prospective buyers. Instead of participating in a specially organized pilot, a company can begin evaluating a commercial purchase with local sales and service support. Breadner’s involvement also gives Hyundai access to an established heavy-truck and trailer customer base, a practical advantage when convincing operators to adopt an unfamiliar powertrain.

British Columbia Is Testing the Truck in Everyday Freight Operations

British Columbia has become one of the most visible Canadian test beds for hydrogen trucking. In June 2026, HTEC opened what it described as Canada’s first 700-bar commercial heavy-duty clean-hydrogen refueling station in Tsawwassen. The facility was designed to support an initial deployment of 12 Class 7 and Class 8 fuel-cell trucks. Harbour Link Container Services and Triple Eight Transport were identified as the first fleet operators leasing Hyundai XCIENT trucks and using the station, tying hydrogen technology directly to working freight operations rather than controlled demonstrations.

The trucks have also been accumulating kilometres on ordinary delivery routes. HTEC reported that an XCIENT involved in a sustained commercial demonstration had travelled more than 20,000 kilometres carrying grocery loads across Metro Vancouver and to communities including Chilliwack, Squamish, Whistler and Merritt. Those trips are useful because they expose a vehicle to grades, changing temperatures, congestion and real dispatch schedules. British Columbia also committed $16.5 million to an earlier heavy-duty hydrogen pilot involving trucks and fueling infrastructure, illustrating how much coordination is needed before a fuel-cell fleet can operate at meaningful scale.

California Gave Hyundai Its Largest Early U.S. Proving Ground

Before Washington received its new dealer, California provided Hyundai with one of its most important North American demonstrations. The NorCAL ZERO project placed 30 XCIENT fuel-cell Class 8 trucks into commercial operation. California Air Resources Board documentation shows that the North American version underwent testing that included Tejon Pass and temperatures reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The state granted an executive order approving the truck for sale in California in 2022, an important regulatory milestone for a vehicle entering one of America’s most closely regulated heavy-duty markets.

The California project also highlighted what a hydrogen-truck ecosystem looks like when vehicle deployment and fueling are planned together. A high-capacity hydrogen station was developed near the Port of Oakland to support the fleet, with the project designed around the demanding needs of drayage and regional trucking. Hyundai has subsequently said 35 XCIENTs were associated with two California initiatives — 30 through NorCAL ZERO and another five through an Environmental Protection Agency-backed project. That experience gives Washington fleets operating around ports and distribution centres a nearby North American reference point rather than relying only on overseas deployments.

Hyundai Is Quietly Building a North American Dealer Network

The Washington appointment fits a broader distribution strategy that has accelerated over the past year. Hyundai Translead became the official North American distributor for Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell truck in 2025. In June 2026, Tom’s Truck Center in Southern California joined the authorized network. Breadner Trailers followed as the Canadian commercial channel, and Range now adds Washington coverage. The sequence suggests Hyundai is trying to create regional islands of commercial support around markets where hydrogen fleets are already operating or where infrastructure may make deployment realistic.

The vehicle population remains small beside North America’s enormous diesel fleet, but Hyundai has more operating experience than the truck’s limited visibility might suggest. When Hyundai Translead announced its distribution role in 2025, it said Hyundai Motor had delivered more than 3,500 fuel-cell commercial vehicles worldwide since the XCIENT program’s 2020 global launch, including more than 250 heavy-duty XCIENT trucks. In the United States, Hyundai also deployed 21 XCIENTs to support logistics at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia. Each deployment adds operational data while giving prospective customers another fleet to study.

Dealers Solve One Problem; Hydrogen Stations Remain the Bigger Constraint

Adding Range gives Hyundai more sales and maintenance reach, but a dealership cannot solve the central infrastructure problem by itself. Hydrogen has to be produced, transported or generated locally, compressed or liquefied, stored and then dispensed at pressures and flow rates appropriate for heavy trucks. The U.S. Department of Energy has specifically identified high-flow refueling, station cost, fuel-cell durability and total cost of ownership as major areas that must improve for medium- and heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles to scale.

The existing public network also remains modest. Federal alternative-fuel data have shown that U.S. retail hydrogen stations are concentrated overwhelmingly in California, with the infrastructure originally built largely around passenger vehicles. Heavy trucks require much more hydrogen per fill and can impose much larger daily throughput requirements. British Columbia’s Tsawwassen project demonstrates one possible path: place a commercial station near known freight activity, put trucks into specific fleets and build utilization from there. Washington will need a similarly coordinated approach. A truck dealership makes ownership more practical, but operators ultimately need reliable fuel every working day, not simply a vehicle available for purchase.

The Real Test Is Whether Hydrogen Can Become Economically Routine

Hyundai’s latest expansion should therefore be viewed as an incremental commercial milestone rather than evidence that hydrogen semis are about to displace diesel at scale. Fuel-cell trucks face competition from increasingly capable battery-electric models as well as highly optimized diesel equipment. Fleet managers ultimately care about cost per kilometre, uptime, payload, fuel availability, residual value and the ability to keep a truck earning revenue. Hydrogen has potential advantages in refueling time and high-utilization operations, but those advantages can disappear when fuel is scarce or expensive.

There is also an environmental calculation beyond the tailpipe. Hydrogen produced using renewable electricity can have a very different greenhouse-gas footprint from hydrogen derived from fossil fuels without effective carbon management. Studies from U.S. national laboratories therefore assess hydrogen trucking using production pathways and station utilization as well as vehicle efficiency. That makes Hyundai’s dealer strategy important but only one piece of the puzzle. Canada, California and now Washington are gradually adding the trucks, dealers and stations needed to test whether a hydrogen freight ecosystem can work without permanent pilot-project conditions.
