Lexus is making one of its clearest moves yet away from conventional gasoline power in Canada. For 2027, the NX compact luxury SUV will no longer be offered here with a gas-only engine, leaving buyers to choose between the NX 350h hybrid and NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid.
The change carries unusual significance for Canada because the regular hybrid NX will continue to be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario. Along with dropping the turbocharged NX 350, Lexus is giving the SUV a substantially updated hybrid system, revised chassis, new cabin technology and upgraded driver-assistance hardware. The plug-in model gains a larger battery, more electric range and DC fast charging. For an SUV Lexus already describes as one of its strongest Canadian sellers, electrification is no longer an alternative branch of the lineup. It is the lineup.
The Gas-Only NX 350 Is Gone
For the 2026 model year, Canadian NX shoppers could still choose the NX 350, powered by a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Its official combined fuel-consumption rating was 9.5 L/100 km, and its starting MSRP was $54,830. That conventional powertrain disappears when the 2027 model arrives.
The significance goes beyond removing a single trim. Lexus Canada says every 2027 NX will now use either a hybrid-electric or plug-in-hybrid powertrain. That turns electrification from an optional efficiency upgrade into the basic mechanical architecture of one of Lexus Canada’s most important SUVs. Buyers who previously preferred the relatively straightforward turbocharged NX 350 will have to move into the NX 350h instead. At the same time, the change avoids forcing customers all the way into a battery-electric vehicle: both remaining versions still contain gasoline engines, and the conventional hybrid does not require external charging.
Ontario Keeps an Important Piece of NX Production
The powertrain change does not mean Canada is losing NX production. Lexus says the 2027 NX 350h hybrid will continue to be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s Cambridge operation. TMMC began producing the NX in 2022, almost two decades after it started building the Lexus RX in Ontario in 2003.
There is an important split inside the new electrified range. The plug-in NX 450h+ will continue to come from Toyota Motor Kyushu in Japan, while the regular hybrid remains Canadian-built. That makes the Cambridge-built NX increasingly central to Lexus’s volume strategy as the gas-only model disappears. TMMC is also unusual within the Lexus manufacturing network: Lexus says the Ontario operation is the only production site outside Japan to manufacture two Lexus nameplates. For workers and suppliers around southern Ontario, the 2027 decision therefore represents a powertrain transition within an established Canadian manufacturing program rather than an abandonment of domestic assembly.
Lexus Is Introducing a New Generation of Hybrid Hardware
The 2027 NX is more than the current hybrid fitted behind refreshed bodywork. Lexus says its new powertrain uses an e-Axle assembly integrating the transaxle, electric motor and power-control unit into a smaller, lighter package. Silicon-carbide power semiconductors are also being introduced in the inverter to improve the operation of the electrified system.
Engineers have adjusted how electrical power and the gasoline engine work together as well. Greater battery assistance under acceleration is intended to prevent the engine from racing ahead of vehicle speed, addressing a sensation sometimes associated with continuously variable hybrid drivetrains. Lexus also strengthened areas of the engine-block casting and revised electronic control software to reduce unwanted vibration and smooth the transition between electric and hybrid operation. These are relatively technical changes, but their goal is straightforward: make the fuel-saving hardware feel less intrusive. Lexus is trying to make hybridization part of the NX’s refinement rather than something drivers constantly notice.
The NX 450h+ Gets a Bigger Battery and Fast Charging
The plug-in hybrid receives one of the largest mechanical upgrades. Lexus says the newly developed lithium-ion battery in the 2027 NX 450h+ has 30% more capacity and 8% more output than the outgoing system. On selected versions, the manufacturer estimates electric-only driving range will exceed 64 kilometres, although official Natural Resources Canada figures have not yet been published.
More unexpectedly, DC fast-charging capability becomes standard on the plug-in NX. That gives owners another charging option beyond the slower AC charging typically associated with plug-in hybrids. Lexus has also repositioned the battery cells and mounted the pack lower, changes intended to improve body rigidity and lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The outgoing Canadian NX 450h+ carried an official electric range of about 60 kilometres, meaning the new model is expected to stretch that capability further. For commuters able to charge regularly, many everyday journeys could therefore happen before the gasoline engine is required.
Every Canadian 2027 NX Will Have All-Wheel Drive
Lexus Canada is keeping its domestic configuration relatively simple. Three grades are planned—Premium, F SPORT and Luxury—and each will be offered with either the NX 350h hybrid or NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid powertrain. Unlike the U.S. lineup, where certain hybrid versions will also be available with front-wheel drive, all Canadian versions are planned with all-wheel drive.
The revised electronic AWD system itself is changing. Lexus says updated control of the rear electric motor allows the system to remain active during straight-line driving as well as during acceleration, cornering or wheel slip. The manufacturer specifically points to improved stability on low-traction surfaces such as snow, an obvious consideration for Canadian buyers. The all-AWD strategy also removes another layer of complexity from dealership inventories. Instead of choosing among gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and potentially different driveline combinations, Canadian customers will essentially decide how much electrification they want and which equipment grade suits their budget.
Lexus Has Reworked How the NX Drives
Electrification is the headline change, but Lexus has also modified the suspension, steering, braking, accelerator calibration and body structure. Additional structural adhesive and reinforcement are intended to increase rigidity, while suspension tuning has been revised to balance handling response with the quiet ride expected from a luxury crossover.
Even the accelerator assembly has been changed to reduce friction through its travel. A revised braking-control system can apply a small amount of braking while cornering to help control roll and yaw during abrupt manoeuvres such as lane changes. Lexus also expanded steering-wheel adjustment after studying driving-position data and worked on airflow around the wheel openings to improve straight-line stability. None of these modifications is likely to appear as dramatically on a specification sheet as battery capacity or electric range. Collectively, however, they show the scope of the refresh. Lexus is using the switch to an all-electrified range to alter the NX’s driving character rather than simply replacing one engine option.
The Cabin Gets a Much Larger Standard Technology Package
One of the most visible upgrades sits in the dashboard. Every Canadian 2027 NX receives a 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen as standard equipment, paired visually with a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. That effectively eliminates the smaller-screen experience previously found farther down many luxury-model ranges and makes the major infotainment interface consistent across the lineup.
Lexus is also introducing an integrated drive recorder that uses the vehicle’s exterior cameras to save footage after manually or automatically triggered events. Depending on equipment and subscription status, other connected features include a digital key, remote vehicle functions, cloud navigation and an intelligent voice assistant. Higher trims can add a more unusual feature called Sensory Concierge, which combines lighting, music and fragrance to alter the cabin atmosphere. Lexus has developed several scents for the system, including citrus, floral and musk-inspired profiles. It is an unconventional touch, but it illustrates how luxury automakers are increasingly trying to differentiate vehicles through digital and sensory experiences as traditional mechanical distinctions narrow.
Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 Becomes Standard
The technology upgrade extends well beyond entertainment. Every 2027 NX will include Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, the company’s latest collection of driver-assistance systems. Its standard functions include a pre-collision system capable of detecting several types of road users, lane-departure assistance, lane tracing, road-sign recognition, automatic high beams and full-speed dynamic radar cruise control.
Additional available technologies go further. Lane Change Assist can perform a lane change under specified conditions, while Front Cross-Traffic Alert watches for vehicles approaching from the sides as the NX enters an intersection. Rear pedestrian detection can provide warnings and brake when necessary. Traffic Jam Assist is designed for low-speed, limited-access-road driving and can provide temporary hands-free steering assistance while requiring the driver to remain attentive and prepared to retake control. These systems do not turn the NX into an autonomous vehicle, but they represent a substantial expansion in sensor-based assistance compared with the safety equipment historically expected from a compact luxury crossover.
The Cambridge Connection Makes This More Than a Model-Year Update
TMMC has become one of the largest pieces of Canada’s automotive manufacturing sector. The company operates three Ontario production lines—two in Cambridge and one in Woodstock—employing more than 8,500 people and possessing annual capacity of more than 500,000 vehicles. Its product portfolio includes Toyota RAV4 models alongside Lexus NX and RX production.
Quality has also become part of the plant’s identity. In June 2026, TMMC’s North Plant received a Silver award in J.D. Power’s U.S. Initial Quality Study, its sixth plant-quality award. Lexus says TMMC has accumulated 24 quality awards since becoming eligible in 1991. Against that background, keeping NX hybrid assembly in Cambridge matters strategically. Lexus is removing the conventional gasoline version while retaining production of the powertrain type it expects to carry more of the model’s future volume. The Canadian factory is therefore participating directly in Lexus’s electrification shift rather than being left with a fading combustion-only product.
Pricing Will Determine How Big the Shift Feels for Buyers
One important piece remains missing: Canadian pricing. Lexus says complete 2027 grade and price information will be announced closer to launch. That matters because the outgoing 2026 NX 350 started at $54,830, while the NX 350h began at $57,675. Removing the gasoline version therefore eliminates what had been the least-expensive entry point into the Canadian NX range.
The final price structure will reveal whether Lexus narrows that gap or effectively raises the floor for NX ownership. Buyers will receive considerably more electrified hardware and standard technology, but affordability remains especially important in the compact luxury segment. What is already clear is the direction of travel. The NX is not becoming fully electric; Lexus is instead betting that hybrids can replace conventional gasoline models while retaining the long-distance convenience many Canadian drivers still expect. With Canadian-built hybrid production continuing in Cambridge, the 2027 NX turns that strategy into a particularly visible made-in-Ontario test case.
