Electric pickups have often faced an uncomfortable trade-off: impressive performance on paper, but compromises in the areas traditional ute buyers care about most. MG is trying to narrow that gap with the new MGU9 EV, an all-electric dual-cab headed first to Australia with a claimed 430-kilometre WLTP range and a 3,500-kilogram braked towing capacity.
Priced at A$78,990 before on-road costs, the MGU9 EV combines a 102.2-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with dual-motor all-wheel drive, producing 325 kW and 700 Nm. Yet the numbers that may matter most extend beyond acceleration and range. Payload, charging speed, storage, vehicle-to-load power and real-world towing practicality will ultimately determine whether the electric U9 can persuade Australians accustomed to diesel-powered workhorses.
Australia Gets the MGU9 EV Before the Rest of the World
Australia will become the first global market to launch the fully electric MGU9, with local arrivals scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2026. MG Motor Australia has priced the initial version at A$78,990 before on-road costs. That puts the electric ute well above the company’s existing diesel U9 range, signalling that MG is not trying to position its first battery-powered pickup as an inexpensive fleet workhorse. Instead, the company describes it as a lifestyle-focused vehicle combining traditional ute flexibility with the refinement expected from a modern electric vehicle.
That strategy makes Australia an unusually important proving ground. Dual-cab utes are deeply embedded in the country’s new-vehicle market, serving everyone from tradespeople and fleet operators to families towing boats and caravans. MG is therefore launching into a customer base with unusually demanding expectations. A convincing electric ute cannot simply accelerate quickly or eliminate tailpipe emissions. It needs enough towing capacity, usable storage, comfortable road manners and sufficient range to perform tasks that Australians already expect conventional utes to handle without much thought.
Dual Motors Give It 325 kW and 700 Nm
Performance should not be one of the MGU9 EV’s difficulties. Two electric motors provide all-wheel drive and combined outputs of 325 kW and 700 Nm, with MG claiming the ute can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. For something designed to carry equipment and tow substantial trailers, that represents serious straight-line performance. It also illustrates how profoundly electrification can change expectations around a vehicle category historically associated with relatively slow diesel engines.
The comparison with MG’s own diesel U9 is particularly revealing. Its 2.5-litre turbo-diesel produces 160 kW and 520 Nm, meaning the EV brings substantially more power as well as additional torque. Electric motors also produce their response differently from conventional combustion engines, without waiting for an automatic transmission to change gears or a turbocharger to build boost. That could make the MGU9 EV feel unusually effortless when joining fast-moving traffic or climbing hills. The real test, however, will be how smoothly MG calibrates all that performance when the vehicle is carrying cargo or pulling a heavy trailer.
A 102.2-kWh LFP Battery Delivers 430 km of Claimed Range
Underneath the MGU9 EV sits a 102.2-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, giving the ute a claimed WLTP driving range of 430 kilometres. That is an important figure because electric pickups have an inherently difficult job. They are large, relatively heavy and aerodynamically challenging, while owners are also likely to add passengers, cargo, roof accessories and trailers. MG has consequently given its electric ute a substantially larger battery than many mainstream electric passenger vehicles.
The 430-kilometre number should still be treated as a standardized laboratory figure rather than a guarantee of what every owner will experience. Speed, temperature, terrain, accessories, driving behaviour and vehicle load can all influence actual electricity consumption. More importantly, MG has not announced a separate driving-range figure while towing a heavy caravan or trailer. That distinction matters for rural and recreational users. A commuter returning to a home charger each evening faces a very different challenge from a family towing hundreds of kilometres between regional charging locations. The headline range establishes the starting point, but real towing tests will be especially significant.
The 3,500-kg Tow Rating Comes With a Payload Compromise
The MGU9 EV’s most striking capability number may be its 3,500-kilogram braked towing rating. That puts it in familiar territory for Australian dual-cab buyers because 3.5 tonnes is a benchmark commonly associated with mainstream diesel utes. MG also rates the electric model to tow 750 kilograms without trailer brakes. Those figures make the U9 considerably easier to imagine hauling a large caravan, boat or equipment trailer than earlier electric pickups that arrived with substantially lower limits.
There is a trade-off, however. Payload is rated at 685 kilograms, considerably below the one-tonne territory associated with many traditional commercial utes. Payload also has to account for more than whatever is placed in the tray. Passengers, accessories and trailer tow-ball mass can consume part of the available allowance, making the detailed weight calculation important for owners who regularly tow. The MGU9 EV therefore looks better suited to recreational towing and mixed family use than to applications requiring maximum towing capacity and a heavily loaded tray simultaneously. That distinction helps explain why MG repeatedly describes it as a lifestyle ute rather than simply an electric replacement for every diesel work vehicle.
Charging Speed Could Be Its Most Noticeable Limitation
The large battery helps deliver useful range, but replenishing it may require some patience on long trips. MG says the U9 EV supports three-phase AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC fast charging at a maximum of 115 kW. Under suitable conditions, the manufacturer quotes approximately 42 minutes to move the battery from 20 to 80 per cent. That is workable for a meal stop or longer highway break, although it is not especially fast by newer EV standards.
The difference becomes clear beside another electric ute already offered in Australia. KGM says its Musso EV can accept up to 300 kW DC and complete a 20-to-80-per-cent recharge in approximately 31 minutes under appropriate conditions. Charging curves and charger availability mean headline peak rates never tell the entire story, but the comparison highlights an area where the MG appears relatively conservative. That may matter most when towing, because higher energy consumption can produce more frequent charging stops. Around-town owners with overnight charging may barely notice; long-distance travellers could find charging performance nearly as important as the 430-kilometre headline range.
Air Suspension Pushes the Ute Toward SUV-Like Comfort
MG is also taking an unconventional approach underneath the MGU9 EV. Four-wheel electronically controlled air suspension is part of the specification, including variable ride-height capability. That is a notable departure from the straightforward suspension arrangements traditionally used by many work-focused pickups. Conventional ute engineering often prioritizes durability and load carrying ahead of an unloaded ride that feels particularly polished. MG is clearly trying to make the electric U9 behave more like a premium family vehicle when the tray is empty.
That decision fits the vehicle’s wider positioning. Dual-cabs increasingly perform several jobs during the same week: commuter car, school-run transport, recreational vehicle and towing platform. A ute may spend Monday crawling through city traffic and Saturday carrying bicycles toward a campsite. Electronic air suspension potentially gives engineers more freedom to balance those demands, although independent road testing will ultimately determine how successfully it has been calibrated. The EV’s substantial battery mass will be another challenge. Rather than pretending the MGU9 EV is simply a diesel ute with an electric drivetrain installed underneath, MG appears to be leaning into the different driving character electrification can provide.
A 236-Litre Frunk Turns Missing Engine Space Into Storage
Removing a large combustion engine creates an opportunity that conventional utes cannot easily replicate. MG has turned the vacant front section of the MGU9 EV into a 236-litre storage compartment, or frunk. That is unusually substantial and could become one of the vehicle’s most practical everyday features. Valuable equipment, charging cables, grocery bags or muddy camping accessories could be kept separately from passengers while leaving the rear tray available for bulkier cargo. MG also says the tray itself can accommodate a standard pallet and equips the ute with a hands-free automatic tailgate.
Electricity can become another form of utility. The MGU9 EV provides up to 6.6 kW of external vehicle-to-load power, while MG’s Australian electric-vehicle information also lists three 2.2-kW power outlets. That turns the battery into a mobile energy source for equipment away from conventional mains electricity. At a campsite, that could mean running cooking appliances or lighting. On a worksite, power tools become an obvious example. It does not eliminate the need to manage remaining driving range, but it gives the battery a purpose beyond simply moving the vehicle.
The Cabin Looks More Like a Family SUV Than a Basic Work Truck
The lifestyle positioning becomes even clearer inside. The MGU9 EV receives two 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 15-watt wireless phone charging and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. Leather-trimmed front seats are included, while the driver’s seat adds heating, ventilation and massage functionality. The front passenger seat and steering wheel are heated as well. A 360-degree camera system and automatic tailgate further reinforce the emphasis on convenience rather than stripped-back commercial simplicity.
Those features matter because Australia’s dual-cab market has moved far beyond rubber floors and basic radios. Many pickups now operate as primary household vehicles, which means customers increasingly judge them against SUVs for cabin technology, seating comfort and ease of parking. A large electric ute that costs nearly A$79,000 before on-road expenses also needs to feel substantial inside. MG’s equipment strategy appears designed around that expectation. The challenge will be delivering software, controls and material quality that feel appropriate for the price after the novelty of the electric drivetrain fades. On specification alone, however, the U9 EV clearly targets buyers looking for something considerably more comfortable than an old-fashioned commercial pickup.
A$78,990 Places It Between Very Different Electric Rivals
The MGU9 EV’s A$78,990 price places it in an increasingly interesting part of Australia’s electric-ute market. Toyota’s HiLux BEV lineup starts at A$74,990 before on-road costs for an SR dual-cab/chassis, with the SR pickup listed at A$76,490 and SR5 pickup at A$82,990. MG therefore lands between Toyota’s pickup grades rather than attempting to dramatically undercut the industry’s dominant ute nameplate. Its approach emphasizes greater power, a larger battery, strong towing credentials and lifestyle equipment.
KGM occupies a very different position. Its Musso EV range was launched from A$60,000 to A$64,000 drive-away, although pricing structures mean that figure should not be compared directly with MG’s before-on-road price. The diesel MGU9 also remains substantially cheaper, with the range stretching to roughly A$60,990 drive-away before temporary promotional adjustments. Buyers are therefore paying a meaningful premium to choose MG’s electric drivetrain. Whether that additional upfront cost makes sense will depend heavily on charging arrangements, annual kilometres and intended use. For many customers, the decision will be less about EV versus diesel in theory and more about whether their specific routine fits the electric model.
The Market May Be More Ready for an Electric Ute Than It Was a Year Ago
MG’s timing coincides with a remarkable acceleration in Australian electric-vehicle demand. Combined industry reporting put battery-electric sales at roughly 27,089 vehicles in August 2026, representing 24.9 per cent of the national new-vehicle market and setting a monthly record. The Electric Vehicle Council said BEVs and plug-in hybrids together captured 36 per cent of sales that month. Electric adoption is therefore moving beyond a small early-adopter group, even though pickups remain one of the harder vehicle types to electrify convincingly.
The MGU9 EV will arrive through MG’s national dealer network, with launch reporting stating it will receive a seven-year warranty when serviced within that network. One safety detail deserves careful qualification. Some launch coverage describes the EV as having a five-star ANCAP rating, but ANCAP’s current official MGU9 listing specifically states that its five-star assessment applies to diesel variants. An EV-specific application is therefore not independently confirmed on ANCAP’s published record as of September 18, 2026. That caveat aside, the U9 EV shows how quickly the electric-ute proposition is changing: full-size towing capability is arriving before fast charging and payload compromises have completely disappeared.
