BYD Recalls 183,211 Cars After Brake-Pedal Defect Triggers Safety Action in China

A small component around a brake pedal has prompted a sizable safety action for one of the world’s largest electrified-vehicle manufacturers. BYD is recalling 183,211 vehicles in China after regulators identified a manufacturing problem involving brake-pedal stopper pads that can deteriorate after extended use. The campaign covers several generations of the Qin and Tang families produced between 2014 and 2022.

The issue does not mean the affected vehicles suddenly lose their ability to brake. Instead, regulators say the stopper can crack, break or, in extreme cases, detach, potentially causing the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the pedal is not being pressed. That false signal could confuse motorists travelling behind the vehicle. BYD will replace the affected component free of charge through authorized dealers.

Four Groups of BYD Vehicles Are Covered

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation disclosed the campaign on September 18, 2026, with two separate recall registrations covering four groups of vehicles. BYD Auto Industry Co. is recalling 58,026 Tang-series vehicles built between March 28, 2015, and December 21, 2018. Another 77,846 newer-generation Tang DM vehicles manufactured from May 19, 2018, through January 14, 2022, are included, along with 7,023 newer-generation Tang EVs produced between December 27, 2018, and October 25, 2021.

BYD Auto Co. is separately recalling 40,316 Qin-series vehicles built from June 27, 2014, through June 9, 2019. Together, the four populations total 183,211 vehicles. The campaign took effect immediately when announced. The wide production window is notable because it stretches across almost eight years of manufacturing, meaning affected vehicles can range from relatively recent models to cars that have already spent more than a decade in everyday service. For owners, eligibility therefore depends on the specific vehicle rather than simply its age or nameplate.

A Small Stopper Pad Is at the Centre of the Problem

The component behind the recall is considerably less complicated than a battery pack, traction motor or advanced driver-assistance computer. According to the Chinese regulator, manufacturing problems resulted in abnormal material properties in certain batches of brake-pedal stopper pads. After prolonged use, the affected material can crack and deteriorate. Under the most severe circumstances described by regulators, the stopper can separate altogether.

That matters because the stopper plays a role in the mechanism that determines whether the vehicle recognizes the brake pedal as being released. If it fails in the way identified by the recall, the brake lamps can remain illuminated while the driver’s foot is off the pedal. Importantly, the regulator’s notice describes an erroneous brake-light signal rather than a failure of the hydraulic or regenerative braking systems themselves. That distinction prevents the problem from being overstated. The safety concern is nevertheless genuine: motorists behind the vehicle may receive information suggesting braking is occurring when it is not, reducing the usefulness of an important visual warning system.

Why a Constant Brake Light Can Become a Safety Concern

Brake lamps are deliberately simple signals. A light appearing at the rear of a vehicle tells surrounding traffic that the driver has applied the brakes, allowing following motorists to begin judging whether they should slow down as well. A lamp that remains continuously illuminated can undermine that relationship between the signal and the vehicle’s actual behaviour. In stop-and-go urban traffic, for example, a motorist behind an affected BYD could see brake lights that provide no clear indication of when genuine braking begins.

Research into brake-light design reinforces how closely signalling and driver response are connected. A 2022 driving-simulation study involving different speeds, deceleration levels and brake-light patterns found that changes to brake-light presentation could alter driver response times; flashing conditions reduced braking response times by roughly 3% to 7% in the tested scenarios. That research examined enhanced warning systems rather than BYD’s defect, but it illustrates the broader safety principle involved: drivers depend on accurate visual information from the vehicle ahead. A misleading brake signal can therefore matter even when the vehicle’s actual braking hardware continues operating.

Dealers Will Replace the Improved Component for Free

BYD’s remedy is mechanical rather than a software update. The company will have authorized dealers replace affected brake-pedal stopper pads with an improved component at no charge. Chinese recall regulations generally place responsibility for eliminating a qualifying vehicle defect on the manufacturer, including the cost of the corrective action. In this case, the official notice specifically confirms that the replacement will be provided free to affected owners.

There is one important qualification. Some vehicles in the recall population have already received the improved stopper pad, according to the regulator, and those cars will not require the component to be replaced again. BYD plans to contact affected users through registered mail, telephone calls and text messages. Owners can also check recall information through China’s official defect-product recall system, which allows vehicle identification numbers to be used when determining whether a particular car is included. The process matters especially in a campaign involving older vehicles, because ownership may have changed since the cars originally left BYD dealerships.

The Age of the Vehicles Makes This a Long-Tail Defect

The earliest Qin vehicles covered by the recall were produced in June 2014, while the newest affected Tang DM vehicles were manufactured as recently as January 2022. That means the safety campaign is addressing cars across a broad range of ages rather than correcting a fault limited to a single recent production run. The regulator specifically linked the problem to deterioration after extended use, making time in service an important part of the defect mechanism.

Material-aging issues can be particularly difficult for vehicle manufacturers because they may not become obvious during initial production checks or the early years of ownership. A part can work normally for years before heat, repeated movement, pressure and ordinary wear expose a weakness in its material properties. The BYD notice does not provide a failure rate, nor does it state that every one of the 183,211 vehicles will experience a broken stopper. The recall instead defines a population in which the relevant manufacturing condition may be present, allowing the potentially vulnerable component to be replaced before deterioration creates the brake-light problem described by regulators.

BYD Has Faced Other Large Safety Campaigns

The latest action is not BYD’s first substantial recall in China. In September 2024, Chinese regulators announced a recall covering 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan PLUS electric vehicles because a manufacturing issue involving an electric power-steering controller could create microscopic cracks in a capacitor, with a potential risk of overheating and fire. BYD’s prescribed solution involved adding an insulating pad to the affected controller assemblies.

Other campaigns followed in 2025. In October, BYD recalled 44,535 Tang vehicles over an issue involving the drive-motor controller and another 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles over inadequate battery sealing, for a combined 115,783 vehicles. The next month, 88,981 Qin PLUS DM-i plug-in hybrids were recalled because inconsistencies involving battery packs could restrict power output. Those earlier campaigns involved different components and failure mechanisms, so they should not be interpreted as evidence that the current brake-pedal problem is related. They do show, however, how modern recall systems can address faults ranging from complex high-voltage hardware to inexpensive mechanical pieces.

China’s Recall System Is Handling Millions of Vehicles

Vehicle recalls have become a routine part of China’s enormous automotive market. The State Administration for Market Regulation reported that manufacturers carried out 190 automotive recall actions during 2025, involving approximately 6.846 million vehicles. The number of recall actions was 18.5% lower than a year earlier, while the number of vehicles involved declined 39.1%, according to the regulator’s annual report.

China’s defective-vehicle regulations define a recall as action taken by a manufacturer to eliminate a defect in vehicles that have already been sold. Manufacturers that confirm a defect are required to carry out corrective measures, while available remedies can include repairs, replacement of components, returns or other measures capable of eliminating the problem. Manufacturers also bear the cost of eliminating the defect. Against that larger regulatory backdrop, BYD’s 183,211-vehicle campaign is substantial but not unusual in concept. Recall programs are designed to identify a defined risk population and correct the problem rather than imply that every affected vehicle has already suffered the defect.

The Recall Comes as BYD’s Global Footprint Keeps Growing

The timing places the safety campaign under greater scrutiny because BYD is no longer primarily a China-focused manufacturer. The company reported global new-energy vehicle sales of 440,293 units in August 2026, up 17.8% from a year earlier. Overseas sales reached 189,466 vehicles that month, according to company data reported by Reuters, representing rapid expansion outside BYD’s home market. In 2025, the company sold about 4.6 million vehicles globally.

BYD is simultaneously increasing its manufacturing presence overseas. The company has begun establishing production in Hungary and has been evaluating additional European manufacturing locations, while its European adviser has said BYD ultimately expects to require three vehicle assembly plants and a battery factory in the region. That expansion makes product-quality management increasingly consequential. The current recall itself is a Chinese-market action covering specified domestically produced vehicles, and the regulator’s notice does not extend the 183,211 figure to overseas markets. For BYD, resolving an aging mechanical defect efficiently is therefore both a regulatory obligation at home and a reminder of the quality-control demands that accompany global scale.
