General Motors has spent several years arguing that the future of in-car software should rely less on smartphones and more on technology built directly into the vehicle. Its redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, however, show that familiar phone connectivity still has an important place in that future.
The new pickups will retain Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while introducing an extensively redesigned GM interface that places smartphone apps alongside native functions such as trailering information, vehicle status and navigation. The approach creates a striking contrast with newer GM electric vehicles, where the company began eliminating phone projection in 2023. Rather than simply choosing between CarPlay and GM software, the Silverado and Sierra suggest GM is trying to make the two coexist.
CarPlay Is Staying in GM’s Most Important Pickups
The redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 will support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto when they arrive with GM’s new user interface. That matters partly because these are not niche vehicles being used to test an experimental feature. GM describes its light-duty pickups as its highest-volume vehicles, giving the company an enormous pool of customers who will interact with the redesigned software. The new system is scheduled to debut in the trucks before expanding more broadly through GM’s portfolio.
Importantly, CarPlay is not technically “returning” to these gasoline-powered pickups because it never disappeared from them. GM initially removed smartphone projection from newly developed EVs while continuing to offer it in its combustion-engine vehicles. What changes for the 2027 trucks is how deeply CarPlay and Android Auto fit into GM’s own software. Instead of treating phone projection as a separate environment that temporarily takes over the infotainment display, GM is building it into a larger digital workspace. That distinction makes the Silverado and Sierra decision more nuanced than a straightforward reversal.
GM’s EV Strategy Created the Controversy
The contrast dates back to March 2023, when GM announced plans to eliminate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from future electric vehicles, beginning with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. Instead of projecting a driver’s smartphone onto the dashboard, those EVs would rely on built-in software developed with Google. Reuters reported at the time that tighter integration could give GM more control over navigation, charging information and vehicle data while supporting the company’s ambitions for connected services.
GM argued that an EV presented different software demands from a conventional vehicle. An integrated navigation system, for example, can understand battery condition, estimated driving range and available charging locations in ways a basic phone-projection layer may not. But the strategy also created an obvious consumer trade-off. Drivers accustomed to Apple Maps, Messages, podcasts or other familiar smartphone apps could no longer simply connect their iPhone and continue using the same interface. The controversy became larger in 2025 when CEO Mary Barra discussed eventually extending GM’s native-software philosophy more broadly, although GM subsequently clarified that CarPlay and Android Auto would remain in gasoline-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future.
The New System Lets CarPlay Share the Screen
GM’s solution in the Silverado and Sierra is not to surrender the entire dashboard to Apple or Google. CarPlay and Android Auto instead appear inside a large contextual window within GM’s own interface. That means a driver could have a familiar navigation or audio application open while still seeing truck-specific information alongside it. Native functions including vehicle status and trailering information do not necessarily disappear simply because a smartphone has been connected.
That seemingly small design decision addresses one of GM’s major complaints about older phone-projection systems: moving between two different digital environments. Truck owners may use CarPlay for music or messaging but still need GM software to check trailer data, select a camera view or change another vehicle-specific setting. Under the new approach, those functions can exist together instead of repeatedly replacing one another on the display. GM software executive Michael Wahlstrom said the company heard from customers who appreciated the simplicity of CarPlay and Android Auto but also wanted easy access to everything their vehicle could do. For someone towing a camper or equipment trailer on a long trip, that combination could be much more useful than an infotainment system designed primarily around entertainment.
Silverado and Sierra Are Becoming Rolling Digital Workspaces
The software arrives alongside one of the biggest interior technology upgrades in the history of GM’s full-size pickups. Every redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500 receives a 16.3-inch centre display and a 12.2-inch driver information screen. Higher-end versions, including the Silverado ZR2 and High Country, can add an 11.5-inch front-passenger display along with a head-up display and digital rear-camera mirror. Chevrolet says those features can create more than 60 inches of combined available digital-display area. GMC has designed a similarly screen-heavy environment for upper Sierra trims.
GM insists larger displays are not intended simply to put more information in front of the driver. The interface uses customizable quick-access controls, different instrument-cluster layouts for activities such as towing and off-roading, and larger interactive areas intended to make functions easier to operate. Physical controls have not disappeared either. Frequently used functions still retain tactile controls where GM believes they make sense. That balance is particularly important in a pickup, where someone wearing work gloves, travelling over a rough construction road or towing a heavy trailer may not want to hunt through several touchscreen menus just to reach a common function.
Google Still Plays a Major Role Behind the Dashboard
Keeping CarPlay does not mean GM is backing away from its investment in native software. The redesigned interface includes Google Maps, Google Play applications and access to Google Gemini, alongside services delivered through OnStar. In other words, an owner does not have to connect a phone to get navigation and numerous connected features. The truck itself is increasingly functioning like a connected computing platform with applications, account integration and software that can change throughout the vehicle’s life.
GM also says the new architecture is designed for continuing over-the-air updates. That allows software functions, interface behaviour and performance to evolve after a truck leaves the dealership. This is becoming increasingly important as automakers try to move beyond the traditional model in which dashboard technology is essentially frozen when a vehicle is built. The Silverado and Sierra therefore represent a compromise rather than an abandonment of GM’s software strategy. Apple CarPlay can handle the applications an iPhone owner prefers, while GM retains control over core vehicle functions, towing tools, cameras, driver-assistance information and the underlying infotainment architecture. The smartphone becomes one component of the digital experience rather than the entire experience.
Customer Feedback Appears to Have Changed the Equation
GM executives have been unusually explicit about the role customer feedback played in the new design. Wahlstrom said people like CarPlay and Android Auto because they are user-centric, while GM’s designers said research identified frustration with drivers hunting for controls, taking too many steps to complete basic tasks and encountering inconsistent interfaces. The company responded by emphasizing fewer taps, predictable controls and easier access to frequently used functions. GM also cited 2025 Ipsos research indicating infotainment ranked among the top three purchase drivers for new-vehicle shoppers.
Putting the redesigned interface into Silverado and Sierra immediately raises the stakes. The Verge reported that GM sells close to 900,000 of the two pickups annually, giving the company considerably more real-world feedback than it might receive by launching a new interface in a low-volume specialty model. That scale also demonstrates why familiar smartphone connectivity can be difficult for an automaker to dismiss. A truck may be purchased primarily for towing, payload or work capability, but its digital interface is something an owner touches virtually every time the vehicle is driven. For buyers keeping a pickup for many years, software usability has become part of the ownership equation alongside horsepower, fuel economy and durability.
The Biggest Question Is What Happens to GM’s EVs
The Silverado and Sierra announcement does not automatically mean Apple CarPlay is coming back to Chevrolet and GMC electric vehicles. GM has not announced the restoration of phone projection to models that were developed without it, and reporting surrounding the new interface says executives have not confirmed whether the same CarPlay integration will eventually migrate to the company’s EV lineup. That leaves vehicles such as the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV and Silverado EV, along with related electric models from GMC and Cadillac, on a different software path for now.
There is nevertheless an intriguing technical detail in GM’s announcement. The company describes its new interface foundation as scalable across electric, gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. That means the software architecture itself is not inherently restricted to combustion-powered trucks. Whether CarPlay becomes part of future EV versions of that architecture remains a product decision rather than a confirmed feature. For consumers, that makes model-specific equipment lists particularly important. For GM, the 2027 Silverado and Sierra offer a major real-world test of a middle ground: keep control of the vehicle’s underlying digital platform while allowing customers to bring the smartphone interface many have spent years learning and personalizing.
