That reputation has evidence behind it, but mileage alone says surprisingly little about the condition of an individual vehicle.

Maintenance history, engine family, driving environment, previous use, corrosion, accident repairs, and neglected wear items can matter as much as the number displayed on the dashboard. A carefully maintained Toyota with 160,000 miles can be a stronger purchase than a neglected example showing 90,000. The National Insurance Crime Bureau provides VINCheck, which can identify certain vehicles reported by participating insurers as salvage or flood damaged. However, databases are not perfect, particularly if damage was never insured or reported. That is why physical inspection remains essential. A Toyota known for surviving hundreds of thousands of miles can still become an electrical nightmare after immersion. For high-mileage vehicles, unexplained electrical quirks combined with suspicious interior evidence should be treated seriously.

Make Sure the Odometer Tells a Story That Matches the Car

That still means longevity is a probability rather than a promise. A neglected example can fail early, while a well-maintained individual vehicle can outperform expectations.
