A vehicle recall can sound routine until the defect affects the view a driver depends on while backing up. Ford is now recalling more than 20,000 vehicles in Canada as part of two new North American safety actions, one involving rear-view camera images on F-150 and F-250 Super Duty pickups and another involving rear-quarter-window trim on certain Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers.
The Canadian action arrives as Ford continues working through a wider series of camera- and software-related safety campaigns. More than 134,000 vehicles are covered by the two corresponding actions in the United States. For Canadian owners, the immediate concern is straightforward: a camera image that is partly blocked can reduce visibility at exactly the moment a truck is moving in reverse, while loose exterior trim can become a hazard if it separates from a vehicle in motion.
Two Recall Actions Put More Than 20,000 Canadian Vehicles in Focus
Ford’s newest Canadian recall activity covers more than 20,000 vehicles across two distinct defects. One involves the rear-view camera display on F-150 and F-250 Super Duty pickups, while the other concerns rear-quarter-window glass trim on 2023 and 2024 Mustang Mach-E models sold in Canada. The same pair of actions covers more than 134,000 vehicles in the United States, giving the issue a sizeable North American footprint.
The two defects are very different, but both illustrate how a seemingly small component can become a safety matter. On the pickups, the concern is what the driver can see while reversing. On the Mach-E, the concern is whether exterior trim remains securely attached. For an owner, neither problem necessarily announces itself with a dramatic mechanical failure. A display can still be illuminated while important information is obscured, and a trim piece can look normal before its attachment weakens. That is why VIN-based recall checks matter more than a quick visual inspection.
Why the Rear-View Camera Issue Matters
The pickup problem is not simply a case of a camera shutting off. In the corresponding U.S. campaign, Ford identified a software condition in which the camera “Views” menu may fail to disappear when the transmission is shifted into reverse. The menu can then cover part of the rear-view image. The U.S. action involves 47,587 trucks, including certain 2021–2023 F-150s and 2023–2026 F-250s, while Canadian reporting confirms F-150 and F-250 Super Duty vehicles are also affected by the new camera action.
That matters because Canada treats rear visibility as a regulated safety function. Transport Canada says backup cameras are required by regulation on passenger cars, SUVs, light pickups and minivans, and its recall notices repeatedly warn that an incorrect, missing or obstructed rear-view image can increase crash risk. Consider a pickup backing out of a busy parking space: losing part of the image does not make the truck undriveable, but it removes useful information precisely when the driver is checking the area behind a large vehicle.
F-150 and F-250 Super Duty Trucks Are Central to the Camera Action
The F-Series connection makes the camera issue especially notable. The F-150 is a full-size pickup used for everything from commuting to towing, while the F-250 Super Duty is larger and commonly used for heavier-duty work. In the U.S. filing tied to the latest action, 24,408 F-150s and 23,179 F-250s are listed, for a total of 47,587 trucks. Canadian owners should not assume those exact U.S. model-year boundaries automatically determine eligibility here; recall coverage is ultimately tied to the vehicle identification number and the Canadian campaign.
The practical risk is easy to understand on a long pickup. Drivers still need to use mirrors, direct observation and normal reversing precautions, but the camera supplies a view of an area that can otherwise be difficult to judge from the cab. Transport Canada specifically encourages drivers to look over their shoulder and check both mirrors and the display. A partially blocked image therefore does not remove every way to see behind the truck, but it weakens one of the tools designed to make reversing safer.
A Software Menu Can Become a Safety Defect
What makes the latest F-Series problem revealing is that the camera hardware itself does not have to fail for a safety recall to be necessary. The defect is tied to how software manages information on the centre display. In the U.S. campaign, the planned remedy is an update to the accessory protocol interface module, or APIM, so the camera menu dismisses correctly when the truck is placed in reverse. That turns a user-interface behaviour into a regulated safety issue.
Ford’s recent Canadian recalls show how common this repair model has become. A March 2026 Transport Canada recall for certain Bronco and Edge SUVs called for an APIM software update after an overheating infotainment system could prevent the rear-view image from appearing. Another campaign involving certain Explorer and Lincoln models used an over-the-air update to image-processing software, with a dealer visit available as an alternative. Modern vehicles increasingly rely on code to deliver functions once thought of as purely mechanical, so a software correction can now be as safety-critical as replacing a physical part.
Mustang Mach-E Owners Face a Separate Trim Risk
The Mustang Mach-E recall running alongside the camera action involves a different type of problem. Canadian reporting says affected 2023 and 2024 Mach-E vehicles may have rear-quarter-window glass trim that was not secured properly. If the trim loosens and separates while the vehicle is being driven, it can create a road hazard for traffic behind it. The problem is therefore unrelated to the camera software affecting Ford’s pickups, even though both actions are being reported together.
For drivers, that distinction is important because the two recalls should not be blended into one defect. The pickups face a visibility problem rooted in display software; the Mach-E faces an exterior attachment problem. The remedies are different as well. The U.S. Mach-E campaign calls for dealers to inspect the quarter-window glass assemblies and replace them as necessary, while the truck campaign is software-focused. A household that owns more than one Ford should therefore check each VIN separately rather than assuming that a recall notice for one model explains every Ford safety action currently making headlines.
Ford Has Been Here Before With Rear-View Cameras
The latest camera action also lands against a long record of Ford rear-view-camera recalls. In May 2025, a U.S. campaign covering more than one million Ford and Lincoln vehicles addressed software that could cause the rear-view image to delay, freeze or disappear. Transport Canada has since published multiple 2026 visual-system recalls involving Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including campaigns affecting Bronco, Edge, Explorer, Escape, Corsair, Aviator, Navigator and Nautilus models.
The failure modes have not all been identical. One Canadian recall said an infotainment system could overheat and prevent the camera image from displaying. Another involved software that could stop the rear-view image from appearing and could also affect driver-assistance functions such as pre-collision assist and lane keeping. A 2023 Canadian Super Duty recall involved the wrong rear-view image appearing when Pro Trailer Hitch Assist was used. Taken together, these cases show that “camera recall” can describe several separate technical problems—blank screens, frozen images, incorrect views or, in the newest case, an on-screen menu covering part of the picture.
Regulators Have Already Raised the Stakes for Ford
Ford’s handling of camera recalls is also under heightened regulatory scrutiny in the United States. In November 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a $165-million civil penalty after an investigation found Ford had failed to recall vehicles with defective rear-view cameras in a timely manner and had not provided complete and accurate recall information. NHTSA described it as the second-largest civil penalty in the agency’s history at the time.
The agreement went beyond a fine. Ford was required to review recalls issued during the previous three years, improve its recall decision-making and safety-data systems, develop a multi-modal imaging test laboratory and maintain stronger VIN-level component traceability. That background does not mean every new Ford recall reflects the same underlying failure, and the current Canadian actions should be judged on their own facts. It does, however, explain why another rear-view-camera campaign receives attention beyond the number of trucks involved. Camera defects sit in an area where Ford has already faced formal regulatory action and specific obligations to strengthen safety oversight.
What Canadian Ford Owners Should Do Now
Canadian Ford owners do not need to guess whether their vehicle is included. Ford of Canada provides a recall lookup that accepts a 17-digit VIN, and Transport Canada also directs motorists to manufacturer VIN tools and its federal recall database. Ford says recall letters are mailed to the last known registered owner within 60 days after a recall is issued by Transport Canada, although database information can sometimes appear before a letter reaches the mailbox.
For anyone with an F-150, F-250 Super Duty or Mustang Mach-E that may fall within the newly reported actions, the safest step is to check the VIN and follow the campaign-specific instructions. Ford says designated recall repairs are performed at no cost to the owner and should be completed through an authorized Ford dealer. Until a camera-related repair is completed, drivers should continue using mirrors, looking over their shoulder and reversing slowly rather than relying on the display alone—guidance that Transport Canada recommends even when a backup camera is functioning normally.
