Hyundai has given one of its most important vehicles a dramatic reset. The fifth-generation Tucson arrives with a longer and wider body, a noticeably boxier shape, a completely reworked cabin and a growing emphasis on hybrid power and software-driven features. That matters particularly in the United States, where Hyundai describes the Tucson as its best-selling model and sold more than 234,000 examples in 2025.
The redesign also arrives at a moment when compact SUVs have become family vehicles, commuter cars and road-trip machines rolled into one. Hyundai is responding by adding passenger space, widening rear-door access and introducing technology such as its Pleos Connect infotainment platform. Some specifications announced so far apply to South Korea, however, and Hyundai has yet to confirm every detail of the U.S.-market version.
This Is the Tucson’s First Complete Redesign in Six Years
The new Tucson represents the fifth generation of the nameplate and the first ground-up redesign since Hyundai introduced the fourth-generation model in September 2020. That outgoing vehicle was itself a major departure, with sharply creased bodywork and unusual lighting integrated into its grille. Six years later, Hyundai has chosen another significant visual change rather than simply refining what was already working. The new model replaces flowing, heavily sculpted surfaces with straighter lines, larger geometric forms and a more upright SUV profile.
There is considerable pressure for Hyundai to get that transformation right. The Tucson has surpassed 10 million cumulative global sales and has become Hyundai Motor’s most successful global nameplate. In the United States, Hyundai sold 234,230 Tucsons during 2025, up 14% from 206,126 a year earlier. Hyundai Motor America has subsequently continued to describe the Tucson as its top-selling model, making this redesign much more than a styling experiment. It is an overhaul of a vehicle that carries a substantial share of the brand’s sales volume.
A Bigger Body Creates More Useful Family Space
The fifth-generation Tucson has physically grown. Hyundai lists the new model at 4,700 millimetres, or roughly 185 inches, long and 1,905 millimetres, or about 75 inches, wide. Its wheelbase stretches to 2,785 millimetres, approximately 109.6 inches. Compared with the previous generation, overall length increases by 60 millimetres, width grows by 40 millimetres and the distance between the axles expands by 30 millimetres. Height has also increased to 1,685 millimetres.
Those relatively modest numbers translate into changes passengers may notice more readily than another fraction of an inch on a specification sheet. Hyundai says second-row headroom has increased by 29 millimetres, while recent Korean-market specifications indicate rear knee room has gained another 14 millimetres. The rear doors now open as wide as 83 degrees, compared with 73 degrees previously. For a parent manoeuvring a child seat through the back door, an adult helping an older passenger get inside or a family loading bulky bags, that wider opening could prove more meaningful than the Tucson’s tougher-looking styling.
Hyundai Has Traded Sharp Curves for a Boxier SUV Look
The outgoing Tucson became recognizable for its complex “Parametric Dynamics” surfacing. The fifth-generation model heads in a different direction. Hyundai says the SUV now follows its newer “Art of Steel” design philosophy, intended to express the strength and tension associated with formed metal. Visually, that produces large squared-off fenders, cleaner upper surfaces, stronger lower-body elements and a noticeably more upright stance.
Lighting provides much of the new Tucson’s personality. Vertical H-inspired daytime running lamps sit toward the outer edges of the front end, connected visually by a narrow horizontal centre lamp. Hyundai says the centre light uses indirect illumination so its light source is not directly exposed. A similarly horizontal approach appears at the rear, helping make the SUV look wider. The result is deliberately more rugged than the vehicle it replaces. Rather than trying to make a compact crossover appear low and sporty, Hyundai has leaned into the traditional visual cues of an SUV while retaining the Tucson’s five-seat crossover format.
The Cabin Marks an Equally Big Change
The transformation continues behind the steering wheel. Hyundai has moved away from the outgoing Tucson’s sweeping integrated-display treatment in favour of a cabin dominated by a large central touchscreen and a slim digital instrument display positioned ahead of the driver. Physical controls have not disappeared entirely, an important detail for drivers who prefer adjusting common functions without navigating through multiple touchscreen menus.
The bigger technological change is software. The Tucson is the first Hyundai SUV announced with Pleos Connect, Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation infotainment platform. Built on an Android Automotive foundation, Pleos is designed to work more like a modern mobile-device ecosystem than a conventional fixed infotainment unit. It supports over-the-air updates, downloadable applications and Hyundai’s Gleo AI voice assistant, which uses natural-language interactions for vehicle functions and other services. Hyundai ultimately wants Pleos Connect installed in approximately 20 million vehicles by 2030. For Tucson buyers, that makes the new dashboard part of a much broader company shift toward software-defined vehicles rather than simply a larger screen replacing a smaller one.
Gasoline and Hybrid Power Remain Central to the Lineup
Hyundai has now disclosed detailed powertrain information for South Korea, although U.S.-market specifications remain incomplete. The Korean Tucson lineup includes a 1.6-litre turbocharged gasoline engine and a turbocharged 1.6-litre hybrid. The gasoline version is rated at 193 PS and uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new-generation hybrid system is rated at a combined 245 PS, an increase over the previous Korean-market model, while Hyundai quotes combined fuel consumption of approximately 17.4 kilometres per litre under Korean testing procedures.
Those numbers should not simply be copied onto a U.S. specification sheet. Different certification standards and output conventions can produce slightly different advertised figures between markets. Earlier U.S.-focused reporting translated the new hybrid’s output to roughly 242 horsepower, but Hyundai Motor America has not yet released a complete 2027 Tucson specification package. What is clear is the broader direction: Hyundai is retaining both combustion and hybrid choices instead of turning its highest-volume SUV into an EV-only product. The strategy gives mainstream buyers an electrified option without requiring them to depend on public charging infrastructure.
Safety Technology Goes Beyond the Usual Driver-Assistance Features
Some of the most interesting additions are designed for situations owners hope never occur. Hyundai has announced a redundant door-unlocking power system that uses backup electricity to help maintain the ability to unlock doors if a collision interrupts the vehicle’s primary electrical supply. The company has described it as the first application of the technology in a Hyundai vehicle. It illustrates how the redesign extends into underlying safety systems rather than stopping with cameras, screens and exterior styling.
The Korean-market model also introduces features including pedal-misapplication safety assistance and updated forward and reverse parking collision-avoidance systems. Other announced technologies include Memory Reverse Assist, which can record the vehicle’s recent path and help it retrace that route when reversing through a confined area, and a Ground View camera function intended to display the surface immediately beneath the front of the vehicle. Final equipment will depend on trim and market. Until Hyundai Motor America releases its own specifications, those Korean-market features should be treated as indicators of the new Tucson’s technological capability rather than guarantees for every U.S. model.
XRT Gives the Boxier Tucson an Even Tougher Appearance
Hyundai is also bringing back the XRT treatment for buyers who prefer a more outdoors-oriented appearance. The new generation makes that theme easier to pull off because the standard Tucson already has broader shoulders and a more upright body. The XRT builds on those proportions with dedicated exterior details that include a different grille treatment, distinctive wheel-arch garnishes and more aggressive-looking lower-body components.
The important distinction is between appearance and demonstrated off-road hardware. Hyundai’s initial design information emphasizes the XRT’s styling and character rather than announcing major mechanical upgrades such as locking differentials or a dedicated low-range transfer case. That makes the new version similar in philosophy to many rugged-look trims offered throughout the compact-SUV market: it communicates adventure without turning the underlying crossover into a traditional body-on-frame 4×4. Even so, XRT has become useful for Hyundai because it gives buyers an alternative to increasingly sleek crossover styling. On this generation, the tougher trim no longer looks like an accessory package fighting against the basic shape of the vehicle; it fits naturally with the Tucson’s new proportions.
The U.S. Version Still Has Some Important Questions to Answer
The Tucson’s commercial importance in America means the remaining U.S.-specific details could matter as much as its new styling. Hyundai sold a record 901,686 vehicles in the United States in 2025, with the Tucson alone accounting for 234,230 of those deliveries. During the first half of 2026, Hyundai Motor reported 489,656 U.S. sales, up 3%, and specifically identified the Tucson and Palisade among the products helping drive that performance. Hyundai has also been expanding the current Tucson Hybrid range, including more affordable front-wheel-drive versions for 2026.
Hyundai’s global product plan says the all-new Tucson and Tucson Hybrid will begin launching in initial markets during the fourth quarter of 2026, while South Korean sales are scheduled to begin after pricing is announced in October. As of September 21, Hyundai Motor America’s public Tucson materials still focus on the 2026 lineup, leaving U.S. pricing, final engines, fuel-economy ratings, trim structure and equipment availability to be confirmed. That uncertainty is worth emphasizing: the redesign is real and substantial, but American shoppers still need the U.S.-specific details before meaningful price or value comparisons can be made.
