A charging stop can determine whether an electric-vehicle trip feels routine or requires careful planning. Tesla has now put three more Canadian communities on its Supercharger expansion path, with Crowsnest Pass in Alberta, Tobermory in Ontario and Mont-Laurier in Quebec winning the latest round of the company’s site-voting program. At the same time, a much larger Canadian map is taking shape: 84 proposed locations are now competing for votes across nine provinces and Yukon.
The results offer a glimpse into how Tesla is deciding where its charging network should grow next. Some candidates are major population centres, while others sit along highways, ferry routes and remote travel corridors where a strategically placed fast charger could have an outsized effect on long-distance EV travel.
Three Canadian Communities Win the Latest Round
Crowsnest Pass, Tobermory and Mont-Laurier emerged as Tesla’s latest Canadian Supercharger voting winners, giving Alberta, Ontario and Quebec one successful location each in the latest cycle. Tesla’s own voting page lists the three communities among its worldwide winners and says successful locations will become some of the next places considered for Supercharger sites. The geographic spread is notable. Crowsnest Pass sits in southwestern Alberta, Tobermory is at the northern tip of Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula, and Mont-Laurier serves a large area north of the more densely populated Montreal region.
They join four Canadian locations that won an earlier 2026 round: Drumheller, Alberta; Orléans, Ontario; Boucherville, Quebec; and Sydney, Nova Scotia. That means seven Canadian communities have won across the two most recent rounds. Winning, however, should not be confused with receiving an opening date. Tesla’s program identifies locations it plans to pursue, while finding and developing an appropriate site can take considerably longer. For local EV owners, the victory is best understood as a meaningful step forward rather than a promise that chargers will appear immediately.
The New Ballot Has 84 Canadian Locations
The next round is far broader. Eighty-four Canadian locations have been placed on Tesla’s new voting map, spanning nine provinces and Yukon. Quebec has the largest contingent with 24 proposals, followed by Ontario with 20. British Columbia and Alberta each have 15, while Yukon has five. Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador each have one proposal. The geographic mix makes the ballot considerably more than a contest among Canada’s biggest metropolitan areas.
Many proposed sites target gaps that become obvious on longer drives. British Columbia candidates include Port Hardy, Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek and Lillooet. Alberta proposals range from High Level and Grande Cache to Brooks and Waterton Park. Ontario has candidates including Bruce Mines, Sarnia, Niagara Falls and several communities east of Toronto. Quebec’s list stretches from Val-d’Or and Grand-Remous to Roberval, Alma and Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. Yukon proposals include Watson Lake, Haines Junction and two Whitehorse locations. The pattern suggests Tesla is looking both at urban charging demand and at the harder problem of making regional travel easier.
Why the Three Winning Locations Matter
The latest winners illustrate why charging geography can matter as much as population. Crowsnest Pass is positioned along Highway 3 in southwestern Alberta, a major east-west route through the Rockies. Travel Alberta describes the area as an eastern gateway into the Pass from Highway 3. A fast-charging stop there could therefore serve not only residents but drivers crossing southern Alberta and British Columbia, where long distances between communities can make charger placement particularly important.
Tobermory has a different transportation role. It is the southern terminal for the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry between the Bruce Peninsula and South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. Ontario’s ferry service carries passengers and vehicles, with multiple daily crossings during the peak summer season. An EV arriving for a ferry trip is operating on a schedule, making dependable charging close to the route especially useful. Mont-Laurier, meanwhile, sits along Quebec Route 117 in the Laurentians, a corridor used for travel north of the Montreal metropolitan region. Together, the three winners show why smaller communities can become significant charging nodes when they occupy strategic points on a transportation network.
Tesla Gives Drivers a Direct Say in Expansion
Tesla’s voting system is unusual because it allows customers to influence where a private charging company expands. Eligible participants receive five votes during each three-month cycle, but only one vote can be cast for an individual location. Once a vote has been submitted, Tesla says it cannot be moved to another candidate during that round. Owners can also suggest places they believe should be considered for future voting cycles, giving the company another stream of information about areas where demand may be underserved.
That does not mean popularity alone determines where a station ultimately goes. Tesla says its Supercharger team continually evaluates expansion based on factors such as popular routes, destinations and broader market needs. Its Canadian site-hosting information says ideal properties generally have room for at least eight charging stalls and benefit from nearby restaurants, grocery stores, shops, restrooms or Wi-Fi. Voting therefore acts more like a demand signal layered on top of the practical requirements of developing a charging site. A town may win attention from drivers, but Tesla still needs a location that works operationally.
Canada Is Building Far More Than Tesla Chargers
Tesla’s expansion is occurring alongside a much larger buildout of Canadian charging infrastructure. In February 2026, Natural Resources Canada said more than 30,000 EV chargers had already been installed through the federal Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. Ottawa also announced $84.4 million for 122 additional projects expected to install more than 8,000 chargers. Separately, the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s charging initiative has been expanded, with hundreds of millions of dollars committed to networks that could add thousands of public fast-charging stations.
That expansion continued through the summer. In July, the federal government announced almost $9 million for close to 400 additional chargers under ZEVIP, while Hydro-Québec received federal support toward 100 Level 3 chargers for its Electric Circuit network. Tesla has been building at the same time. Recent Canadian network updates have included new or newly active projects in places such as Moncton, Drummondville and Lethbridge, while stations have been reported under construction in communities including Fredericton, Sherwood Park, Hamilton and Fort McMurray. For drivers, the practical result is an increasingly crowded race among networks to cover both highways and everyday urban charging needs.
EV Demand Fell Sharply, Then Began Recovering
The charging expansion comes after an unusually volatile period for Canadian EV sales. Statistics Canada reported that new zero-emission vehicle registrations fell 34.7% in 2025 compared with 2024. ZEVs accounted for 9.5% of new registrations, down from 14.6% one year earlier. Quebec, historically one of Canada’s strongest EV markets, recorded a 48.7% year-over-year decline, while Ontario registrations dropped 17.2%. The changes followed major shifts in purchase incentives and created questions about how quickly EV adoption would continue.
Early 2026 data showed a different direction. Statistics Canada counted 43,113 new ZEV registrations in the first quarter, representing 10.8% of all new vehicle registrations and a 15.8% increase from the same quarter in 2025. Quebec registrations rose 42.1% year over year during the quarter, while Ontario increased 5%. That does not erase the previous year’s decline, but it reinforces why charging companies are planning on a longer horizon than any single quarter. Stations selected today may operate for years, serving a vehicle population that can change considerably over the life of the equipment.
Winning a Vote Is the Beginning, Not the Opening Day
Tesla’s own language leaves room between winning and construction. A successful vote places a community among the locations slated for future Supercharger development, but the company still has to secure a workable host property and move the project through its development process. Its hosting program says Tesla manages construction and operation of Supercharger sites, while property owners provide the physical location. That helps explain why some projects can move quickly while others remain prospective for much longer.
Canada’s existing pipeline also shows several stages happening at once. Some stations have recently opened, while others are under construction and still more remain proposed. That distinction matters for communities such as Crowsnest Pass, Tobermory and Mont-Laurier. The vote is meaningful because it confirms measurable interest and puts each community on Tesla’s development radar, but it is not yet an invitation to plan a road trip around a charger that does not exist. The more immediate story is the scale of what comes next: 84 Canadian proposals are now competing to become the next set of places where that process begins.
