Tesla has finally switched on one of the Cybertruck’s most anticipated energy features, allowing the electric pickup to work alongside a Powerwall 3 during a home power outage. The September 10 rollout closes a long-standing gap in Tesla’s Powershare system and effectively turns the truck into a very large extension of a household battery installation.
For Canadians, however, the picture is less clear. Tesla’s Canadian Powershare page still says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 compatibility will arrive “soon” through an over-the-air update, even as other Tesla materials point toward deeper Cybertruck integration. That leaves Canadian owners with an unusual situation: the technology has moved forward, but Tesla’s own regional documentation has not yet caught up enough to confirm exactly what is available north of the border.
The Cybertruck Can Finally Work Alongside Powerwall 3
Tesla announced on September 10 that Cybertruck Powershare is now available for Powerwall 3 owners. The change matters because Powershare itself is not new. Cybertruck has already been capable of sending energy back into a properly equipped home, but owners with an existing Powerwall system faced a frustrating compatibility gap. A household that had bought deeper into Tesla’s energy ecosystem could not necessarily combine the truck and stationary battery in the way many buyers expected.
The new Powerwall 3 integration changes that arrangement. Tesla says connecting the Cybertruck can extend home backup by more than three days and describes the truck as providing energy capacity equivalent to roughly nine additional Powerwalls. Tesla’s technical documentation also now identifies a Powerwall 3 system paired with a Universal or Gen 3 Wall Connector as having vehicle-to-home functionality available. Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ configurations remain listed separately as coming later. For a household already equipped with Powerwall 3, that makes the Cybertruck far more useful during a prolonged outage than it was when the two products had to operate separately.
Tesla Has Removed an Awkward Hardware Barrier for Powerwall Homes
A standard Cybertruck Powershare installation without a Powerwall relies on a Universal Wall Connector and Powershare Gateway. The gateway performs a critical safety job: it helps isolate the house from the utility grid during an outage so the vehicle can supply electricity without improperly energizing utility lines. That arrangement has allowed the Cybertruck to function as a vehicle-to-home battery even before the new Powerwall 3 integration arrived.
A Powerwall-equipped home works differently. Tesla’s installation guidance says a Powerwall system with a compatible Wall Connector does not require a separate Powershare Gateway, and Tesla specifically warns against adding a Powershare Gateway to a Powerwall system. The existing home-energy hardware performs the necessary backup and grid-disconnection functions. This is important for existing Tesla households because it means the upgrade is fundamentally about making equipment that may already be installed coordinate properly. In practical terms, the Cybertruck becomes another major energy reservoir connected to the home rather than requiring owners to build an entirely separate backup architecture beside their Powerwall installation.
Tesla’s Canadian Website Is Sending Mixed Signals
The Canadian Powershare page had not fully caught up with the rollout when checked on September 11. Tesla Canada explains that a home with Powerwall and a Wall Connector will eventually require no additional Powershare equipment, but the same page still says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 will become compatible with a Powershare vehicle “soon.” It adds that the functionality will be enabled through an over-the-air update. That wording is noticeably different from Tesla’s newer technical material, which marks the Powerwall 3 configuration as available.
There is another wrinkle. Tesla’s Canadian Powerwall information already describes Powerwall 3 as supporting additional energy capacity through “Powershare-capable Cybertruck vehicles.” In other words, two current Tesla Canada pages do not communicate the status in exactly the same way. That does not prove that Canadian Powerwall 3 owners are excluded from the rollout; regional webpages can lag behind software deployments. It also does not prove that every Canadian installation is enabled. Until Tesla updates its Canadian Powershare documentation or confirms regional availability directly, owners have good reason to verify their particular system before treating the U.S. announcement as a nationwide Canadian launch.
The Backup Numbers Are Big, but Household Demand Still Matters
Tesla rates Cybertruck Powershare Home Backup at up to 11.5 kW of continuous output and advertises more than three days of backup from a fully charged truck. That three-day figure is based on an assumed household electricity consumption of about 30 kWh per day, so it should be understood as an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime. Tesla itself notes that actual results depend on energy consumption, the vehicle’s state of charge, solar equipment and other conditions.
The comparison with Powerwall helps put the scale into perspective. A Powerwall 3 has 13.5 kWh of energy capacity, while Tesla says the Cybertruck adds the equivalent of about nine Powerwalls. Nine Powerwall 3 units would represent 121.5 kWh of nominal stored energy. Yet capacity and power are different measurements. A home using several major loads at once can approach the Cybertruck’s 11.5-kW output limit much faster than a house running refrigerators, lights, internet equipment and a few smaller appliances. Cybertruck owners can also set a Powershare discharge limit so the home does not consume battery energy that they want reserved for driving.
Canadian Installation Costs Can Still Be Substantial
For Canadian Cybertruck owners without a Powerwall, home backup is not simply a software switch. Tesla Canada currently lists its Powershare Home Backup Bundle at C$2,700. The package contains a Universal Wall Connector and Powershare Gateway, and Tesla’s online store showed the bundle as out of stock when checked. Professional installation is separate. Tesla says typical Canadian installation costs can range from roughly C$2,500 to C$5,500, depending on the property and electrical work required.
There are also physical eligibility requirements. Tesla’s Canadian shop says the homeowner must be able to park the Cybertruck on the property within six metres of the installation location, and it specifies an electrical-panel rating below 225 amps for the standard setup. Installation must be completed by a Tesla Certified Installer. That makes Powershare considerably different from plugging a refrigerator or power tool into one of the Cybertruck’s onboard outlets. Whole-home backup involves transfer equipment, electrical-code requirements and safe isolation from the grid. A straightforward house may fit Tesla’s standard design relatively easily; an older service panel or unusual electrical layout could make the project more complicated and more expensive.
The Delay Shows Why Bidirectional Charging Is Harder Than It Looks
The concept behind Powershare sounds simple: an electric truck already carries a large battery, so electricity should be able to flow from that battery back into a house. Combining the truck with a stationary battery system is more complicated. Tesla spent far longer than originally expected enabling Cybertruck and Powerwall to operate together, with earlier targets slipping before the Powerwall 3 rollout finally arrived in September 2026.
Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill has described microgrid stability, communication and real-time coordination between the vehicle and home-energy equipment as important engineering challenges. During an outage, the system has to respond to loads changing inside the home while safely operating independently from the utility grid. Tesla also has to support different generations and configurations of energy hardware rather than a single identical installation. The result helps explain why owning both a Cybertruck and Powerwall did not automatically make the two compatible. Bidirectional power involves software, inverters, transfer equipment, safety controls and regulatory requirements working together at precisely the right moment.
Canadian Owners Should Wait for Confirmation, Not Assume the Feature Is Disabled
The Canadian documentation gap is ultimately more confusing than alarming. Tesla is already selling the C$2,700 Powershare hardware package in Canada, its Canadian support pages explain Cybertruck home backup in detail, and its Powerwall 3 specifications explicitly reference additional capacity from Powershare-capable Cybertrucks. Those are strong indications that Tesla has been building the pieces of the same integrated energy ecosystem for Canadian customers. What remains unclear is whether the newly announced Powerwall 3 compatibility has been enabled across Canadian installations at the same time as the broader rollout.
For an owner preparing for a winter outage, that distinction matters. The safest approach is to rely on the status shown for the specific vehicle and home-energy system, along with confirmation from Tesla or a Certified Installer, rather than assuming a feature is live because it was announced elsewhere. Tesla’s software allows Powershare users to monitor backup activity and preserve a minimum vehicle charge, but those controls only matter after the relevant installation has been enabled. The biggest sign of clarity will be simple: Tesla removing “soon” from its Canadian Powershare page and replacing it with explicit Powerwall 3 availability information.
